Why choose Juan Dolio?
Juan Dolio and the neighboring beach town of Guayacanes are the perfect destinations for those seeking a restful couples or family beach vacation with easy access to multiple excursions. If you are staying in Juan Dolio, you are right in the middle between the culture, shopping, dining and nightlife of Santo Domingo, and the great beaches, scuba diving and other attractions of La Romana, and just a half-hour drive from the busy town of Boca Chica. Juan Dolio is a long, thin town, running parallel to the shoreline. There are only two roads: the highway and a small beach road that connects all the hotels, enabling safe walking, jogging or cycling. This is the perfect destination for those seeking a quiet escape with all the comforts of home. There is a bit of nightlife, primarily at the hotels, but this is not what you would call a “party” destination.
What else is nearby
Almost anywhere one could possibly want to go is easily accessible from the coastal highway which cuts through the town of Juan Dolio and follows the shoreline. To the immediate east is an extension of Juan Dolio, called Villas Del Mar, where many restaurants and all-inclusive hotels are located.
About 15 minutes further east is the baseball city of San Pedro de Macoris, the hometown of Sammy Sosa.
An hour beyond is the La Romana/Bayahibe beach area. Travelling west from Juan Dolio you’ll find the fishing village/beach town of Guayacanes, then the beautiful cove-like beach of Playa Caribe, followed by Boca Chica some 20 minutes from Juan Dolio. Santo Domingo is a 50-minute drive west of Juan Dolio.
How to Get There
Most travelers to the Juan Dolio area will arrive at the Las Americas International Airport, located 30-minutes away. However, some flights are starting to arrive at the newly built La Romana airport, just over an hour’s drive from Juan Dolio.
Getting around
Everybody walks in Juan Dolio. The beach road is quiet and has very little traffic. What little traffic it does has is slowed down by dozens of very large speed bumps. Good to remember if you ride a bike! Most hotels here have bicycles on loan to guests. Motoconchos (motorcycle taxis) also cruise the beach road but we don’t recommend using them or the hotel bicycles on the busy highway. Your hotel can help you get a taxi. Rates are usually posted near the entrance to the hotel.
If you’re on a budget, the public buses travel east and west on the highway, passing every few minutes. Just stand anywhere by the side of the road and they’ll stop for you.
